“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me lie in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.” ~Psalm 23:1-2~

On September 23, 1954, God rewarded Ruth Muse Cockrell and the late Robert J. Cockrell, Jr. with their fourth bundle of joy, Russell McClinton Cockrell.

Russell gave his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized into the fellowship of Shiloh Baptist Church in Burgess, Virginia. He received his education in the Northumberland County Public Schools, graduating in 1972.

In the late 70’s, Russell moved to Louisiana to further his career in the fishing industry. During his stay in Louisiana God blessed him with two daughters: Tanisha Lewis and Rita Cockrell. In the early 80’s, Russell returned to Virginia and was joined in holy matrimony to the late Sherril D. Noel, and from their union two children were conceived: Carlos Cockrell and Chanelle Cockrell, and he accepted Aric Noel as his own.

On Thursday, December 31, 2009, Russell’s began a new journey. He was preceded in death by his father, wife, and brothers: Steven and Thomas Cockrell.

He leaves to mourn his sweet memories: his mother, Ruth Cockrell; three daughters: Tanisha (Kevin) Lewis, Rita Cockrell all of Morgan City, Louisiana; and Chanelle Cockrell of Richmond, Virginia; two sons: Carlos (Jessica) Cockrell of North Carolina and Aric Noel; one sister: Frances (Ernest) Polk of Burgess; one brother, Robert J. Cockrell, III of Kilmarnock, Virginia; six aunts: Henrietta, Thelma, Earlor, Barbara, Helen and Gladys; six uncles: Eugene, Ernest, Russell, Carroll, Eddie, and McKinley; his mother and father-in-law: Shirley and Donald Lee Harcum; his brother-in-law: Bruce (Michelle) Harcum; two sisters-in-law: Tracey and Edith Harcum; eleven grandchildren: Nyajah, Nyrel, Ty’sha, Ty’Tre, Raeghan, Jacobi, Seperia, Ashlyn, Cherish, Aniya, and Amazyn Grace; one special lifelong friend, Larry Gaskins, a daughter at heart, Asia Conley; a host of nephews, cousins, and friends.

Interment services were held at the Hope Union Cemetery in Reedville where his pall bearers were: Darryl Raines, Sr., Antonio Noel, Earl Dameron, Marshall Cottrell, Daniel Forester, and Steven Cockrell, Jr. His floral bearers were friends of the family.
